The National Bank of Egypt's (NBE) credit card portfolio grew markedly over the past 3 years, from December 2022 to December 2025, rising from EGP 12.034 billion at the end of 2022 to EGP 30.096 billion at the end of 2025. That is an increase of EGP 18.062 billion and total growth of about 150%.
The growth reflects the expansion of the credit card portfolio, given the cards' role as a payment and short-term financing tool that lets customers meet their purchasing needs and repay purchases according to each card's terms.
Credit card portfolio growth over 3 years:
NBE's credit card portfolio grew by 44% in 2023, rising to EGP 17.343 billion at the end of December from EGP 12.034 billion at the end of 2022, an increase of EGP 5.309 billion.
In 2024, the portfolio continued to grow, reaching EGP 24.989 billion at the end of December, compared with EGP 17.343 billion at the end of the previous year. That was an increase of EGP 7.646 billion and a growth rate of 44.1%, reflecting the continued expansion of the bank's credit card balances.
In 2025, the portfolio rose to EGP 30.096 billion at the end of December, compared with EGP 24.989 billion at the end of 2024, an increase of EGP 5.107 billion and a growth rate of 20.44%, according to data published by the bank.
The roughly 150% rise in the credit card portfolio over 3 years reflects a marked expansion in the volume of credit card balances at the National Bank of Egypt, with growth sustained throughout the period. The portfolio's development remains tied to how much customers use their cards, the expansion of electronic payments, and the bank's lending and default-risk management policies.
