Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), will take part in the Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS 2026), to be held in the Angolan capital, Luanda, on November 3 and 4. The summit is organised by the Jeune Afrique Media Group in partnership with the Government of Angola and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group.

The summit will address four main priorities: mobilising domestic resources, strengthening financial integration across the continent, supporting digital transformation and reinforcing Africa's leading financial institutions, with the aim of developing the African financial sector and boosting its capacity to finance development.

In presenting the CBE governor's participation, the summit highlighted his career and banking experience, as well as the main monetary policy developments in Egypt since he took the helm of the central bank in August 2022.

The summit's introductory profile noted that the CBE adopted a flexible exchange rate regime on March 6, 2024 and raised interest rates by 600 basis points at the same meeting, while annual urban inflation stood at 13.9% in September 2026, compared with a record 38% in September 2023.

It also referred to the Monetary Policy Committee's decision on September 24 to keep the overnight deposit rate at 19%, with inflation expected to converge to the CBE's target of 7% (plus or minus 2 percentage points) in the second half of 2027.

Hassan Abdalla has long experience in the banking sector. He served as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Arab African International Bank (AAIB) for 16 years, from 2002 to 2018. He also chairs the Union de Banques Arabes et Françaises (UBAF) and has previously served on the boards of the Egyptian Exchange and the Institute of International Finance.

The CBE governor is also co-chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) Regional Consultative Group for the Middle East and North Africa.
