The Financial Stability Report published on the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) website has revealed the results of a project supporting smallholder farmers, implemented with the World Food Programme and several participating banks as part of the partnership between the CBE and development partners.
The report said financial inclusion activities carried out during the project's first and second phases, from its launch in 2021 through the end of December 2025, led to the opening of 58,135 bank accounts and the issuance of 4,626 mobile wallets and 3,346 prepaid Meeza cards.
On the financing side, the project provided 3,842 loans worth EGP 38 million to fund small and micro development projects, as well as non-financial services to 1,364 beneficiaries.
Efforts to make financial services more accessible included opening 18 new branches and deploying 37 ATMs and 559 point-of-sale terminals at merchants. In addition, 237,401 people attended financial literacy seminars, 65% of them women.
The project aims to combine economic empowerment with financial inclusion for smallholder farmers by making it easier for them to access formal financial services and products, strengthening financial infrastructure, and providing technical support and non-financial services, helping them cope with economic and climate challenges and raise their productivity.
