Domestic systemically important banks held 65.6% of the banking sector's total assets at the end of March 2026, according to the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) Financial Stability Report, reflecting the significant weight of these banks within the sector.
The report said these banks accounted for 68.8% of total customer loans and facilities and 64.1% of financial investments and treasury bills, while holding 62% of customer deposits and contributing about 67.7% of the banking sector's net profit.
The main items of these banks' financial position posted positive growth in March 2026 compared with March 2025, while their net profit grew by 53.4% over the comparison period.
The report noted that 4 banks were classified as domestic systemically important banks in March 2026, compared with 5 in March 2025. Comparisons of their shares of sector totals between the two periods are therefore affected by the change in the number of banks in the classification, as well as by the growth of their business.
The CBE identifies domestic systemically important banks using indicators that include a bank's size, its interconnectedness with local banks, the availability of substitutes for the financial services it provides, and the sophistication and complexity of its activities. These banks are subject to additional capital requirements commensurate with their importance to the banking sector.
