The number of mobile wallet accounts reached about 60.3 million at the end of March 2026, up 28.7% year on year, while the value of wallet transactions reached about EGP 1.6 trillion in the first quarter of the year, an annual growth rate of 28.2%, according to the Financial Stability Report published on the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) official website.
The report said these indicators reflect the CBE's efforts to promote digital transformation and financial inclusion by developing the mobile payments ecosystem and making electronic financial services available and more widely used in everyday transactions.
The CBE launched the Meeza Digital network in 2018 to provide mobile payment services through e-wallets, and has continued to develop the ecosystem, introduce new services and strengthen the regulatory frameworks that support it.
According to the report, work continues to expand the use of QR codes to boost electronic acceptance: the number of collection points reached about 1 million codes at the end of March 2026, up 14% year on year, broadening the use of e-wallets for payments and collections.
The growth in wallet accounts and transactions comes alongside an expansion of payments infrastructure, with the number of electronic point-of-sale terminals exceeding 1.4 million and the number of ATMs exceeding 26,457 at the end of March 2026.
On financial inclusion, the share of citizens aged 15 and over who are financially included reached 77.9% at the end of March 2026, compared with 77.6% at the end of December 2025, amid continued efforts to broaden access to and use of formal financial services.
