The number of ATMs exceeded 26,457 at the end of March 2026, while the number of electronic point-of-sale terminals topped 1.4 million over the same period, as the infrastructure needed to provide banking services and facilitate electronic transactions expands, according to the Financial Stability Report published on the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) official website.
This expansion is part of efforts to develop the national payments system, improve citizens' access to financial services and spread the use of electronic payments, supporting digital transformation and financial inclusion and making transactions in the economy more efficient.
The report said the CBE continues to develop the payments infrastructure, strengthening the banking sector's readiness to deal with international requirements and changes and supporting efficient financial services and financial stability.
As digital payment services develop, the Instant Payment Network (IPN) recorded about 843 million transactions in the first quarter of 2026, with values exceeding EGP 2 trillion. Together with the InstaPay app, the network enables instant money transfers between banks, speeding up the circulation of money and making transactions easier.
The number of collection points using QR codes reached about 1 million codes at the end of March 2026, up 14% year on year, supporting wider acceptance of electronic payments through mobile wallets.
The development of the payments ecosystem coincided with the financial inclusion rate for citizens aged 15 and over reaching 77.9% at the end of March 2026, compared with 77.6% at the end of December 2025, reflecting a continued broadening of the base of people using formal financial services.
