The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said Suez Canal transit fee revenue rose 21.6% to about USD 4.4 billion in fiscal year 2025/2026, compared with about USD 3.6 billion in the previous fiscal year, supported by higher net tonnage of ships transiting the canal.
The CBE said net tonnage rose 22.4% to about 590.8 million tonnes in fiscal year 2025/2026, reflecting improved shipping traffic through the Suez Canal and a larger volume of trade passing through it.
Separately, the CBE said tourism revenue rose 10.3% to about USD 18.4 billion in fiscal year 2025/2026, compared with about USD 16.7 billion in the previous fiscal year, reflecting the improved performance of the tourism sector and its growing contribution to the country's foreign currency resources.
CBE data also showed the balance of payments posting an overall surplus of about USD 2.8 billion in fiscal year 2025/2026, compared with an overall deficit of about USD 2.1 billion in the previous fiscal year, a sign of improvement in the Egyptian economy's transactions with the rest of the world.
