Banking expert Mohamed Abdel Aal said the balance of payments data released today by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) reflects a marked improvement in the overall performance of the Egyptian economy, despite ongoing regional and international challenges that have put pressure on many economies around the world.
Abdel Aal explained that reading the balance of payments figures should not be limited to the bare indicators and numbers. What matters most is the economic philosophy the data reveals about the nature of the economy and its ability to cope with change.
He noted that a strong economy is not one that never faces shocks, but one with enough resilience to absorb them and keep its balance. Given the geopolitical tensions the region has witnessed, the real question was never whether the Egyptian economy was affected, since being affected in such circumstances is natural. The more important question was how it dealt with that impact.
He added that the answer lies in the diversity of foreign currency sources: when one source comes under pressure, others step in to offset part of the impact, which is the essence of economic sustainability. An economy that relies on a diverse range of resources is better able to withstand volatility than one that depends on a single source.
He stressed that remittances from Egyptians working abroad, foreign direct investment, tourism revenue, exports and Suez Canal revenue are not merely items in the balance of payments. They are multiple lines of defense that strengthen the economy's ability to withstand external shocks and preserve its stability.
Abdel Aal concluded by stressing that the most important message carried by the balance of payments data is that economic diversification is no longer a luxury but a core strategy for achieving economic security and strengthening the ability to weather crises.
He added: “The news ends when the news cycle ends, but the idea that remains is that an economy's strength is not measured by the size of the shocks it faces, but by its ability to absorb them and quickly regain its balance.”
