Interior Ministry security forces have arrested two people in Minya Governorate accused of defrauding bank customers, stealing their electronic payment card data and using it to make purchases on online shopping sites.

Information and investigations by the Public Funds and Organized Crime Sector confirmed that a number of bank customers had been targeted by fraud through phone calls in which the two suspects posed as bank customer service staff or representatives of official bodies.

According to the investigations, the suspects tricked their victims into believing they had won cash prizes or were due grants from a government body, that they needed to update their bank details, or that the suspects could help them obtain loans, luring them into disclosing their card details so their money could be stolen.

The suspects also asked victims to deposit sums into mobile wallets linked to mobile numbers registered in other people's names, claiming this was needed to update their bank details.
