Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), met Gelsomina Vigliotti, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), during her current visit to Egypt, to discuss areas of cooperation, future partnership plans and issues of mutual interest.

Opening the meeting, the Governor welcomed the EIB Vice-President and praised the strategic partnership between the CBE and the European Investment Bank, the financing arm of the European Union. He also reviewed developments in the national economy and the financial soundness indicators of banks operating in Egypt, as well as the positive progress achieved despite unprecedented global and regional challenges.

For her part, Gelsomina Vigliotti noted that the resilience and strength of the Egyptian banking sector are reflected in banks' financial soundness indicators, particularly high capital adequacy and liquidity ratios and a low non-performing loan ratio. She commended the fruitful cooperation between the EIB and Egypt and pointed to the CBE's efforts to support and advance the Egyptian economy.

During the meeting, both sides expressed their aspiration to strengthen their relationship, particularly in sustainability and in supporting the CBE's efforts in sustainable finance. In this context, they reviewed the Greening Financial Systems Program (GFS), a technical assistance programme the EIB provides to support the central bank's sustainable finance efforts, and the CBE affirmed its commitment to activating the programme in the coming period.

The CBE joined the programme in July 2025, and the two sides are preparing to sign a joint cooperation agreement that includes provisions for building technical capacity.
