Interior Ministry authorities have arrested an unemployed man in Cairo's El Marg district on charges of running a social media page to defraud citizens by claiming he could supply counterfeit local currency in exchange for money.
The General Administration for Combating Public Funds Crimes, in coordination with the General Administration for Combating Information Technology Crimes, monitored the page's activity. Security forces identified and arrested the man running it, who was found to have a criminal record.
A mobile phone was found in the suspect's possession, and an examination showed evidence of his activity. He was not found to be in possession of any counterfeit currency.
According to an Interior Ministry statement, the suspect confessed to running the page to lure people seeking counterfeit currency, asking them to transfer money to him and then switching off his phone once he had received the funds.
Legal action has been taken.
