For savings accounts, the advertised rate alone does not tell you what you will actually receive. First, the balance basis: some accounts compute the return on the daily balance and others on the lowest balance in the month, and with the second a single withdrawal can lower the base for the whole month. Second, tiers: the rate can change with the size of the balance, so the advertised rate may belong to a tier above your amount. Third, the minimum balance that earns a return, since some accounts pay nothing below it. Fourth, fees such as account administration, statements and falling below the minimum; these are fixed amounts, so they take a bigger share of a small balance, and any return after them exists only for a specific amount. So compare accounts at your own amount and in the way you will actually use the account. Check each account's key-facts statement for the balance basis, the tiers, the minimum balance that earns a return, every fee and its frequency, and the payout frequency; if a field is not stated, ask the bank about it.
