Can I break only part of a certificate and leave the rest?

Partial breaking is not available on every certificate. The key-facts statement must say explicitly whether breaking part of the certificate is allowed.

  • If it is allowed: you break the part you need and the rest runs on under its terms. Ask: how is the penalty on the broken part calculated? Must the part be in certain multiples? Must a minimum remain in the certificate? And if your return is paid periodically, it will then be on the remaining amount only.

  • If it is not allowed: the options are usually to break the whole certificate with the penalty, which can return less than the amount placed, or to take a loan or overdraft against it if the bank offers one, with the certificate held until repayment.

Before deciding, check the key-facts statement: partial breaking, the penalty table, when breaking is first allowed, and the terms for borrowing against the certificate.
