If a monthly payout does not suit you, certificates and deposits offer other frequencies: every three months, every six months, once a year, or the return builds up and is paid once at the end of the term; some deposits pay the return upfront at the start. The advertised rate is annual whatever the frequency; the frequency decides when the return reaches you, and a product's grid can price each frequency at a slightly different rate, which reflects payment timing rather than an advantage of one frequency over another. Watch two things: an 'at maturity' figure may be the total for the whole term rather than a yearly rate, so it cannot be compared with an annual rate without normalising; and with an upfront payout you need to know whether the figure is per year or for the whole term, and if you break the product, the part of the upfront return not earned for the period held is usually clawed back. A fair comparison between products uses the same frequency, the same term and the same amount. Check the key-facts statement for the frequencies offered and the rate of each, and the basis of an at-maturity or upfront figure.
