About this calculator

Compute a certificate of deposit's return from amount, term, annual rate and payout frequency — monthly, quarterly or at maturity.

Upfront or at-maturity payout on a certificate longer than a year is quoted as a total over the whole term — compare certificates on the same payout frequency and term.

FAQs

Does a certificate's rate change after purchase?

Fixed-rate certificates keep their rate to maturity regardless of market moves; variable-rate ones track the corridor rate.

How are cumulative certificates compared?

Banks quote cumulative certificates in different ways: a yearly rate compounded monthly, semi-annually or annually, a total over the term, or a redemption value such as 160%. Banky turns them all into the one figure you actually receive — the total over the term — and divides it by the years for the «average annual profit rate», the same unit as a periodic payout. Example: 160% over 3 years = a 60% total = 20% a year on average, above an 18% monthly certificate (60,000 against 54,000 on every 100,000). An upfront 40% over 3 years averages 13.33% a year, all paid on day one.

When can I break a certificate, and at what cost?

Most certificates allow redemption after six months per a schedule that reduces the return — terms differ by bank, so review before buying.
