Trump signs U.S. dollar for the first time in history… ending a 165-year tradition

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced that U.S. banknotes will feature the signature of President Donald Trump starting in the summer of 2026, in a historic move marking the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.

Under the decision, the first $100 bills bearing Trump’s signature—alongside that of the Treasury Secretary—will be issued in June, with the change gradually extending to other denominations in the following months.

This marks an unprecedented shift, as Trump becomes the first sitting U.S. president to have his signature appear on the nation’s currency. The move also eliminates the signature of the U.S. Treasurer, ending a tradition that has been in place since 1861.

The Treasury confirmed that the update is part of a commemorative issuance celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary, noting that the overall design of banknotes will remain unchanged, except for replacing the Treasurer’s signature with that of the president.

The newly issued banknotes are expected to take several weeks to enter circulation across banks and markets, while current notes bearing previous officials’ signatures will continue to be printed during the transition period.

The step comes as part of a broader effort by the administration to place the president’s name across various symbolic initiatives and national projects in celebration of this historic milestone.
