Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced a slowdown in the country's urban inflation rate in June, breaking a three-month streak of consecutive increases. The development comes as the authorities prepare for a key interest rate decision on Thursday.

According to the statement released on Wednesday, consumer prices in Egypt’s urban areas rose by 14.9% year-on-year in June, down from 16.8% in May. The decline appears to be largely driven by a slowdown in food and beverage inflation — the largest single component in the consumer price basket — which increased by 6.9% annually, compared to 11.2% in the previous month.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices recorded a slight deflation of 0.1% in June, following a 1.9% increase in May.
